Pens & More wood creations by George Reed

Antler, wood, brightly colored acrylics--all of these materials provide a richness for creations. There's no reason that the objects in our everyday life can't be beautiful and an expression of who we are. Hand turning materials on a lathe allows me to uncover the natural grains and colors of the material while creating useful products. Each piece is turned individually and reveals the uniqueness in shape and color of the material. Using chisels and clamps, I take nature and remold it into something "person useful."

I started with a mini-lathe making pens as a hobby, and my interest in various materials and creations grew. After using exotic and Missouri woods, I branched off into naturally harvested antler. I love trying the colorful synthetics. Besides pens, letter openers, and magnifying glasses, I have added wine bottle stoppers and key rings.

In the past two years, I have experimented with boxes and love to work with different shapes, colors, and inlays. It is an ongoing process, and I like to use different types of joinery and woods to see the results in a finished product. I try to maintain "inside the box" quality while achieving "outside the box" designs. The finish that I put on boxes can also change the look of a piece. When people look at the boxes and then reach out to touch the grain, I know that they see the same richness that I do.

I like to use what I call "heirloom" wood to create a custom piece for people. I have made pieces from old houses and trees because those materials have a special meaning for someone. In my workshop, I have wood from an oak tree that a family planted in the 1800s. When the tree came down in a storm, a descendant from this family saved the wood for me; she orders gifts for her family--pens and keyrings-- made from this tree.

My work combines form and function in products that can be used in everyday life, whether it is a box for jewelry, a distinctive pen, a wine bottle stopper, or a paperclip holder. Am I an artist or a craftsman? I don't know, but no piece is alike, and the future for new creations is endless.
