Mark & Patricia Sheppard Our collaborative ceramics evolved from our separate interests in painting and ceramics. Patty creates wheel thrown pieces in a porcelaneous stoneware and uses sgraffitto techniques to scratch a border design on each piece. Mark then creates original hand painted drawings on the clay using a fine brush and underglazes. His drawings are inspired by his sketchbook ideas and by various Dutch artists such as Bosch and Bruegel. We also create hand made tiles. Mark studied fine arts at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting in 1991. He then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1993 from Washington University in St. Louis, where he met Patricia. Mark has taught classes at the St. Louis Artists Guild and the St. Louis Art Museum. He continues to paint and draw and exhibit his work as well as teach in the Fine Arts Departments at ST. Charles Community College in St. Peters, Missouri and St. Louis Community College at Meramec in Kirkwood, Missouri. Patricia earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics in 1989 from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She then went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1993 from Washington University in St. Louis. She has taught Fine Arts classes at several area community colleges and at the St. Louis Art Museum and the Craft Alliance in University City, Missouri. Patricia is currently teaching classes at St. Louis Community College at Meramec. Together, Mark and Patricia maintain a home studio. Their collaboration in clay began in 1998 when they decided to combine their talents. They have exhibited their work at many juried art fairs throughout the Midwest and recently were awarded 2nd place in the clay category at the 2004 Art and Air Fair in Webster Groves, Missouri.
