Our PotteryLike many potters, as a child I loved to play in the mudbut not to make mud piesI wanted to make pots and pans. After college and marriage and more college and four kids and the graduate school at MU which concluded with a doctorate in counseling psych, I entered the field of higher education as a Dean of Students. Thirty years later, I retired and went to pot! Literally! Classes and workshops in ceramics gave me the skills to throw and hand-build functional and decorative pots. Then taking the next giant step, my husband Darrel and I built a studio and opened Kimball Arts at our rural home near Sedalia, MO. Because I love functional, beautiful pottery, I try to make pieces that others will find pleasure in using and displaying in their homes. Most of my work is made of stoneware, wheel-thrown or hand-built. I find design ideas in traditional pottery and also in my collection of antique pressed glass. Pots are bisque fired in an electric kiln, then glazes which I make "from scratch" are applied by dipping, brushing, or spraying, often layering different glazes to achieve a variety of finishes. The firing is completed in a gas kiln under a reduction atmosphere to Cone 10 (approximately 2330 degrees F). With only food-safe glazes, this results in functional ware which is very durable, microwave and dishwasher safe. Started in a cool oven, casseroles are suitable for baking (think beans). They should not be placed over direct flame, however. I try to enter a few art exhibits each year. Most recently, a piece named "Sunday Best Pitcher" won Best of Show in the SVAA Summer View show. Currently, my work is sold through art and craft shows and directly from the Kimball Arts studio (by appointment). I hold memberships in the Sedalia Visual Arts Assoc.; the Southwest MO Arts Assoc.; the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts; charter membership in The Potters Council of the American Ceramics Assoc.; and juried membership in the Best of Missouri Hands. All contribute to my continuing growth as an artist and potter. I love interacting with people who appreciate art and especially pottery (of course). My palette of glazes is gradually developing into a few main themes, but I will always be eager to try something new, because for me, the creative process is what it is all about. Kimball Arts
