My studio education and early practice were in sculpture in a wide variety of media. Introducing wood into my work, I discovered a love of its visual warmth and tactile qualities. I also learned to prefer a combination of fabrication and carving in both hand-tool and machine processes. Most of my succeeding work has been one of a kind and limited edition studio furniture.

Ken Nelsen, WoodworkerA few years ago, I began to include lathe-turned elements in some of my pieces. I realized that turning is essentially hand-carving rapidly spinning wood and that turned forms could be combined with joinery or cut apart and recombined to create forms which could not be made solely on the lathe. Most of my work is now centered around the lathe allowing me to pursue sculptural form while using both hand and various machine methods.

My current work is an exploration of ovoid lidded vessels based on bowl forms and includes both machine and hand fitted joints in contrasting domestic hardwoods.
