I am an identical twin born in Oakland, California. My maternal grandfather, Walter Whipple, was a make-up artist and silent screen actor ("Hell's Hinges" - 1915). My lifelong interest in colors, painting, and drama, is, I think, a gift from my Grandfather. Many of my wood carvings depict what I consider to be vignettes of American life: events of the day, at the movies, the circus, or politics. How I came to carve wood, however, is a mystery. I spent much of my life working as a TWA flight attendant. I traveled all over the world, from London to Hong Kong. Then, in 1994, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So, following successful treatment, I recuperated in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. It was while walking on the Appalachian Trail that I picked up a gnarled piece of wood and began to whittle with a pocket knife. Well, I've never stopped carving! I have a daughter who graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Graphic Arts. Kathy Ruth Neal
