My photography is mostly of nature and wildlife. I see animal photography as a way of bringing more than just color or design to a wall but rather a dimension of personality as well. My interest in animal art is directed more toward wildlife rather than toward the more common domestic animals. While they usually present a challenge to photograph, I find the images to be far more fascinating. Additionally, the photography creates an environmental awareness that may even translate into improving animal welfare, especially for the African species. Through environmental abuse, habitat destruction, poaching and other human interactions the future of many of these animals is in doubt. This special photography of these species can provide a chance to enjoy their being and hopefully they will survive. I have been photographing nature and wildlife for over forty years. In earlier years I did whale photography in the south pacific, later came eagle photography on the Mississippi River, then came butterfly photography in the Caribbean. In the last 5 years I have been going to Africa for safari photography. I have been to Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. More adventures are in planning stages. And, during the last 4 years I started doing gallery and art shows. I have my own small studio and do all of my photo processing, printing, matting and most all of my framing. I take great pride in utilizing high quality materials in production process. I have recently won juror's choice for "In the Wild," an international photography contest and had my images displayed in their Vermont gallery. I am a juried photographer for the Greater Saint Louis Art Association. Jim Irwin Wildlife Photography, LLC
