For me, beads are purely an aesthetic experience. Their history is always fascinating, but it is the color, the texture, and the form that feeds the passion and love I have for them. I have been a serious designer of beaded jewelry for 12 years which includes using a wide variety of beads. I now create my own lampwork beads and fused glass pieces. It has been over thirty years since my interest and attraction to beads first developed, when I was beginning my education as a painter and art educator in Chicago. Working with the fused glass can be totally consuming. Each design is like creating an abstract painting. The color and shape in addition to the variety of possibilities as determined by layering the glass is what drives the creation; One piece leads to another, then to a series, and then to a body of work. The ideas come at all times, whether I'm in my studio, teaching at the university, driving on the highway, or in the shower. The colors, shapes and textures are always with me as I imagine how each creation is going to look. One design leads to the next. In addition to creating the fused glass pieces, I begin to think of how other beads would work with the piece by adding my lampwork beads or hundreds of Czech glass beads which encompass the fused glass and enhance the design. The unlimited possibilities of creating fused glass and lampwork beads keeps me totally engaged in a process that is a constant joy and aesthetic and technical challenge. Jeri Changar Designs
