Heather Long Heather is a self-taught artist working in a mixed media of Colored Pencil, Watercolor and India ink. She had worked in graphite and Pen & Ink prior to 2000 when she discovered artist grade colored pencils. She found that she could achieve the high degree of detail that she demanded in a realistic style. In 2001 she started taking her art seriously and began showing her work. In 2004 she made the move to Missouri to be closer to her family and pursue her artwork. She bought a secluded 200-year-old log cabin in the woods and is in the process of restoring it. Here she has found the perfect place to do her artwork and get inspiration for her works. Her works consist of up to 20 or more layers of colored pencil over a watercolor underpainting. "I find it to be a very relaxing experience where my mind completely focuses on nothing but the point of the pencil, hours can pass in mere minutes." She works from her own photos, often visiting zoos, sitting in the timber for hours at a time, watching a cherished pets unconditional love for its Master or stopping long enough to study a wildflowers petals. She credits her Grandfather for her love of nature and wildlife. Her fondest memories are those of long walks in the timber behind his home where he taught her to respect wildlife and study even the smallest of details. It is this early attention to detail that has carried over into her present works. Juried Exhibits: She currently has pieces at "Call of the Wild" Wildlife Art Gallery in Bloomington IL, "The Laughing Cat Art Gallery" in Clinton IL, and in many private and corporate collections across the United States. She is also an award winning wood sculptor at local and international shows. Heather Long
