With a strong background in antique restoration, my design style leaned toward the traditional (Stickley, Shaker, & Craftsman). In May of 1999, my daughter requested that I design some furniture for her new home. However, traditional was not her style, asking me to create some contemporary pieces. This presented unfamiliar challenges for me. As I groped for ideas, I hit on the concept of incorporating exotic woods, free form shapes, and clean lines. Inspired by such things as broken toothpicks, trees, oriental art, and Sci-Fi TV, I have created my own style of unique yet functional art pieces. Tropical hardwoods, being extremely expensive, has made me reluctant to throw away even the smallest scraps. As my scrap pile grew, the need to find a way to recycle inspired me to once again move in another direction. Still wanting to retain the functional aspect I have come to love, I incorporated my design style into a line of clocks. I do not know from where my next inspiration will come, but it is with each new challenge that I continue to grow. As long as there are people who love my designs, I will continue to do what I enjoy, taking a piece of wood and making something that says Wow, look at me, I'm beautiful! Artist Statement: Wood an extraordinary material beautiful, yet strong, versitile, and renewable. Creating funcitonal designs with it is my passion!
