Functional wood sculpture/marquetry by Dogwood Hill Studio

Dana Leake, marquetarian, is a long time resident of the Missouri Ozarks. He has had a life long interest in fine woodworking; and for the past several years has turned his hand to the ancient art of marquetry. This allows Dana the artistic freedom to create his pictures, while making a conscious effort to respect the woodlands surrounding his home and studio at Dogwood Hill Farm, in southern Howell County, as he only works with veneers sliced to 1/28" to 1/42" thickness.

As a member of the Columbia Art League, Marquetry Society of America (retired), the Yellow House Community Arts Center Board of Directors, and juried member of The Best of Missouri Hands, Dana's work has been displayed in galleries in West Plains, Columbia, Jefferson City, and Springfield, Missouri, as well as Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Marquetry is the art of cutting and inlaying different types of wood, metal, or shell, into a background wood veneer, in order to form a picture or design. A pattern is chosen and transferred to the background veneer, then the pieces to be inlaid are chosen by the color, grain, and texture that best suits the design or the artist's vision.

Dana's interest in marquetry extends not only to the history of this art form and the practical application in furniture making and repair. He also accepts commissioned work for pictures, can work from photos, and he can tailor the design concept and choice of woods to suit any aesthetic style.

Recently Dana has expanded his work to include hardwood band saw boxes, each with an organic shape - leaves, fish, waves, etc. The drawers in these boxes are all lined with flocking, to hold your most precious treasures. In addition to the boxes, he also uses highly figured hardwoods to create unique hand mirrors and frames for wall mirrors (some with inlaid designs).
