Charles Pritchard creates unique wooden forms, both functional and decorative, from the Midwestern-native woods, dramatic burls of the West Coast, and exotics harvested from managed-tropical forests. Nature offers unexpected delights with bark inclusions, insect trails, and molds enhancing rich tones released as my tools peel away the outer layer of the wood. Each piece has unique attributes; and as it turns on the lathe, I must decide how best to exhibit them. I find wood turning forever fresh and exciting with a never-ending variety of natural materials and techniques to explore. What began 20 years ago as a release from the pressure of my medical career, now feeds a desire to understand the exceptionalities behind the different woods and appreciation for creating something of beauty I can share with others. The wooden forms I produce, both functional and decorative, are from the Midwestern-native woods, dramatic burls of the West Coast, and exotics harvested from managed-tropical forests. Utilizing only environmentally safe finishing materials, I prefer a fine natural sheen. Occasionally, I will enhance a piece by carving or texturing; but avoid high glosses and artificial embellishments. Chuck has trained with award-winning craftsmen from around the world to develop his style for hand-worked art. His pieces are exhibited in galleries in several states and are recognized as lasting works of art developed from sustainable materials. Chuck lives seven miles from the small Missouri community of Kirksville, where he practices Cardiology. Creative Woods
