Diversity has always been a goal of Ms. Opal Caruthers. This diversity is clearly reflected in her lifestyle, as well as her paintings which range from portraits to landscapes, decorative objects, and humorous subjects. Soon after retirement from a nursing career in 1986, at the age of 64, Ms. Caruthers began her art studies. She studied with Larry Adams at that time and continues through today with those studies. She was born in Arkansas but moved to Missouri at an early age. She has resided in Pemiscot County since 1936 and specifically in Caruthersville since the early 1940s. She loves to paint her beloved Bootheel Missouri. She believes there is a lifetime of painting to be done there because of its history, interesting people, and scenic landscapes. However, she occasionally will travel and sometimes can't resist painting a beautiful setting wherever she finds it. She paints any subject matter in any desired style from realism to abstract. Her favorite painting style is impressionism. Oils are her favorite medium. She is presently experimenting with mixed media/oil. Her active lifestyle in her later life is a model for everyone. This includes being the current president of the Pemiscot County Historical Society and she is active in her church. She is also a member of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. She paints daily, exhibits her paintings, and is often recognized. She was recently commissioned to paint the cover for the Caruthersville Sesquicentennial Cookbook. In addition, she maintains her own web site for her work and the work of her fellow Missouri Bootheel artists. Boot Heel Art
